Overview

Thinking differently to achieve optimal results was fundamental to the redevelopment’s ambition. The first of its kind in Cambridge, the project saw a 6-point uplift in EPC rating, moving from EPC F to EPC A.

Innovative residential developer, Ridgelink, is committed to carbon reduction. Enabled by continual data collection, Ridgelink create the most efficient living spaces – environmentally and economically – and seeks net-zero building design.

The redevelopment followed Passivhaus methodology and features the most effective solutions on the market.

With this in mind, Artus Air was chosen.

“The Artus team collaborated with us throughout the detailed implementation stages, ensuring the solution worked for us. The Artus units were a key component of our data-driven intelligent control system, and we are looking to repeat the use of Artus in our next development.”

Space utilisation

Creating nine apartments from four previously stood meant optimising space as much as possible without compromising efficiency.

The low storey heights have been achieved by the use of a 225mm deep Posi-Joist (MiTek) system. All MEP services – ductwork, pipework, drainage, power and data – have been carefully integrated to run within the depth of this system.

The Artus AR60, with its compact, integrated componentry and depth of 206mm, was the only viable solution that fit within the height limit.

Optimised comfort

Data collection was also vital for precise control of heating and cooling, enabling seamless integration with the heat pump system installed by Ridgelink (one of the most advanced installations in the UK).

When in cooling mode, the waste heat from the Artus solutions heats a buffer tank, enhancing the efficiency of the heat pumps, which in turn generate domestic hot water.
The low noise emission from the Artus units was also very important to create the most relaxed living environment possible.

End Result

The complete retrofit and extension of Grosvenor Court has achieved success on three fronts:

High environmental performance

Unprecedented reduction in operational costs

Uncomprimised resident comfort

Despite the building footprint expanding by 50%, and the provision of air conditioning, the energy costs have been reduced to less than 10% of historic bills.

The building has gone from an EPC F rating to an EPC A rating – a significant achievement for a residential retrofit development.

It has achieved these through considered, integrated design at every stage: a reconstructed, highly insulated facade and roof; a central plant designed specifically for future energy tariffs; and compact Artus fan-coil-based solutions that integrate with the building structure.
