Office
Hilson Moran’s Living Lab is an award-winning office space in London, developed as a platform for experimentation and industry collaboration. This office hub at Shackleton House, next to the River Thames, beautifully reflects Hilson Moran’s ethos.
Hilson Moran are experts in providing engineering advice and a progressive design approach to a range of high-profile, sustainability-conscious clients in the built environment.
The Living Lab space marks the culmination of a collaborative design process, where the project team of Gensler, Turner & Townsend Alinea and ISG worked alongside Hilson Moran’s own specialist engineers, designers and staff.
Together, they created a bespoke space to inspire industry collaboration and experimentation in design and solution innovation, and enhance business growth through an optimum working and living environment.
The ‘Living Lab’ was intentionally designed with a transparent, open layout, with building services showcased to enable visitors to explore and collaborate.
Hilson Moran is a pioneer of efficient design utilising the latest low-carbon technologies across its projects. It is committed to design which is truly effective in carbon reduction, both capital and operational.
Occupant comfort is a clear driver, with live sensing in place to understand natural human flow and capacity in an open-plan space.
There are a variety of spaces within this environment, including the River Café – a beautiful eating and event space with a large glass frontage out to the Thames.

“Artus’ customer service operates on an entirely different level. My experience of working with the Artus team has exceeded all expectations.”

Hilson Moran chose to use the AR75 in its River Café.
With a large glass frontage creating continuous solar gains in the building, it was important to find a solution that could maintain a precise 22°C– even during the summer and at large events.
Sustainability was embedded in the process from the start, with the Living Lab currently targeting BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Platinum: a clear commitment to staff wellbeing for the long term.
The specification was a 4 pipe, 2 coil water-based heating and cooling solution, with an integrated BMS controller and integrated flushing and bypass kit, all accessed from the underside.
Artus’ 4 x AR75 units deliver 16kW of cooling to the 190 m2 space. The maximum air speed allowed is 0.25m/s at a height of 2.7m, meaning no draughts. The efficient Coanda + air swirl pattern provides a wide, uniform distribution of precisely controlled air temperature throughout the space without requiring ducts or grilles.
The Artus units provide the space with a no-draughts, high-efficiency solution using the least number of terminal units.
We continue to collaborate with the Hilson Moran team as they move into their new space to ensure our solution is operating at peak efficiency.
Hilson Moran intends to measure the new space over the next few seasons using a state-of-the-art BMS solution to provide real-world data on operation and comfort.
